Early depression screening can identify patients in need of referral for psychotherapy and/or pharmacotherapy for depression and can identify youth at risk of suicide. In fact, many youth who attempt suicide had recent contact with a health professional. The use of depression screening during these visits may have positively identified these youth, especially as adolescents report willingness to discuss mental health concerns with their doctor.
